Cathay Pacific has concluded a purchase agreement with Airbus for the delivery of 30 new A350-900s for HK$60.8 billion (NZD$10.8 billion) with the first of the aircraft to be delivered in 2016, according to the Shipping Gazette.
The deal marks the single largest ever aircraft purchase for the airline, and is an important step in airline's plan to grow its fleet and remain at the forefront of the industry, Cathay CEO Tony Tyler was quoted saying.
The A350-900 XWB (Extra Wide Body) will be deployed on long-haul services to Europe.
Advantages of the new aircraft include greater operating efficiency and lower fuel consumption, said Airbus COO John Leahy.
Cathay's investment in the new aircraft is in addition to other investments it has already committed to make between now and 2013, including a new cargo terminal at Hong Kong International Airport.
